Each day we wake up we have the chance to seize the day, to strike out to new territory or smash our goals. It can be tough though. Sometimes that may be because of motivation, obstacles to success, or the normal trials and tribulations that life can throw at us. At Transcend Coaching we know that even small things can make a big difference. Make every-day amazing with our 10 Awesome Ways to Start Your Day!

1. The Night Before

Night bedroom

Sports stars know well the benefit of the night before the big event. Whether it’s marathon-runners carb loading, boxers hitting the sauna to ensure they make fighting weight or footballers getting a solid night’s rest. The night before is an uber-important element of any preparation routine.

The first of our 10 Awesome Ways to Start Your Day actually begins on the night before. Get your evening routine sorted. Your evening routine will have a huge impact on the quality of your sleep. Better quality sleep automatically means a better morning! Check out our 5 Tips to Get Better Sleep

2. Give Yourself Time

We’re gonna say it, f**k the snooze button.

The snooze button is killing you. Start your day by setting your alarm and sticking to it. Give yourself more time in the morning by gradually slipping your alarm forward until your have earned at least an hour to start the day to yourself.

You’ve heard the saying of start as you mean to go on. That rings true for the morning routine. Repeatedly hitting the snooze button will leave you snoozesome for the whole day. Getting up early enough to have some time to yourself will mean you won’t be carrying a flustered and agitated mood through the whole day. It’ll also give you time to do things for YOU.

3. Make Your Bed

Your Parents weren’t being mean yelling at you to tidy your bed in the morning. There is an almost meditative quality to it.

You’ve likely heard that outer order can create inner calm. A tidy desk will free your mind in work. A neat living room reduces the chaotic feeling that comes from living in disorganisation. And making your bed the minute you get up is equally beneficial. By doing it, you’re psychologically taking the day by the horns.

As Naval Admiral McRaven said in his commencement address, ‘you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and it will encourage you to do one task after another after another.’

4. Stretch, Exercise, Meditate

Working out with weights

This one is simple, just pick one and do it. It doesn’t have to be any longer than 15 minutes. There are TONNES of guided videos on YouTube to help you with whichever option you choose. It will help to wake your body up properly for the day.

You’ll hold a better posture throughout the day too which means you will physically hold less stress. And you’ll really supercharge that feeling of accomplishment. Plus, obviously you’ll be healthier. So it’s win win win with this entry on our 10 Awesome Ways To Start Your Day!

5. Shower

Look, you may enjoy your bath in the evening but a quick shower in the morning is absolutely perfect for starting the day. Starting it colder to fully wake you up and then warming the water will then help to raise blood flow and soothe stiff joints. A shower also has the secondary mental benefit of leaving you feeling and KNOWING that you are fresh for your day.

6. See The Light

Humans live by a circadian rhythm, and it responds primarily to changes in light and darkness. The rhythms themselves are linked to physical, emotional and mental changes throughout the day. Getting outside will wake you up naturally, seeing daylight can immediately lighten your mood. And getting a lungful of fresh air (or relatively fresh depending on where you live) is always good for you.

You can of course combine the morning exercise, meditation or stretch with this stop on our 10 Awesome Ways to Start Your Day in order to save a little time. Even if it means that your exercise is actually a short stroll outdoors. It’ll wake you up naturally and you’ll generally feel good.

Rock out

7. Feel Good Tunes

Music is such an important tool for us. A single song can completely change your mood. Starting your day right can begin with setting up a great playlist of songs that YOU love. Songs that get you going. That lift your mood. That energise you.

It doesn’t matter you prefer epic movie soundtrack moments or hard French techno pop or even classic hip hop. Set up a playlist, stick it on and spin the volume dial up. You can manage your morning mood with music.

8. Eat something

You will have heard it time and again. Eat some breakfast. It’s not the most important meal of the day, but it is a really good idea to get something in you. Eating a healthy breakfast within an hour of waking means you’ll be less hungry throughout the whole day, and it absolutely improves concentration and focus levels.

9. Cuddles

OK so this doesn’t have to be literally cuddles. It’s more a case of having human contact – take a moment to enjoy the family, friends or pets with whom you may live. Talk to them, yes get a cuddle from your partner or kids or parents. It will make you feel good and them too!

10. Smile

Sometimes this can be the hardest thing in the world, but you really need to start your day on a positive note. Find something, anything, that brings you positivity. Be thankful for something. Smile about something good in your life. If you have trouble reminding yourself of positive things, make it your job on an evening to write a list of positive aspects of your life that you can refer to. Start with a smile and your day will be infinitely better.
