My goal first and foremost when working with clients is to understand their world. This might sound obvious but if you have ever had any coaching before then you may have experienced a lack in this most important of areas.
Much coaching comes in the form of someone who considers themselves to be an authority then using their knowledge to help people achieve a certain result. The difficulty with this is that the individual involved in the coaching never feels understood.
I recently worked with a client who wanted to increase their performance at work, they worked in sales. So, they duly went out and found a coach who could help them so they though specially in sales. The coach had a long, varied background in sales. Suffice it to say that they used a one size fits all approach which did not suit the client at all. The result, a very frustrated client!
So, how do I get to thoroughly understand your world? Simple, by exploring the 6 Human Needs and how they appear within your life.
What are the 6 Human Needs I hear you ask? Well, they are are framework based on various facets of our life that when explored can help to explain why we do what we do, think the way we think and feel the way we feel. The 6 Human Needs are shown below:
- Certainty
- Variety
- Significance
- Love
- Growth
- Contribution
I have discussed the 6 Human Needs before but to put them into context here they help to put the various pieces of our lives in to some semblance of an order. Things change as we go through the stages of our lives but we can always relate things back to the framework.
As part of my coaching conversations we dig into these areas and a fantastic activity I use is the identification of a clients top two needs and specifically how they show up and are satisfied in their lives. The use of the framework together with the in depth consultation lead to a comforting place of true understanding. I cannot coach without this understanding. Once we get there we will both know.
